I see my role as a  preschool teacher to provide interactions, materials, and experiences that foster creativity, support independence and encourage social emotional and academic growth in a safe and fun environment.

I highly value open ended exploration of materials and learning about our natural world by spending most of our time in nature.  My space includes a well-equipped indoor and outdoor classrooms and we spend much of our time exploring and learning outside.

In our outdoor classroom, we have a mud kitchen, construction zone and a climber.  In the summer the children help with our garden.  And right behind our backyard we have access to a forest, with great climbing trees and paths for exploration.  We also spend time in our neighborhood going on walks and exploring nearby fields.
In our indoor classroom, we have all the materials and areas that other preschools have plus more!  We have a library, block area, sensory table, and pretend area.  Our pet bunny, Bun Bun resides in our classroom and we often have special pet visitors (like the time my daughter adopted two rats!).

Our art area is a particularly busy space where children have daily access to paints, playdough, cutting and collaging materials and so much more!
The rhythm of our day includes child-directed times as well as teacher-directed times.  The children are able to quickly learn our routines so they know what to expect each day when they come in.
Daily Routine
Times are approximate and all of this is flexible, but this is the general rhythm of our day!

8:15-8:55 Early Care

8:55-9:10  Arrival

Children come in, wash hands and work on an activity while waiting for everyone to settle in

9:10-9:30 Morning Meeting
We sit together and chat about our day.  We look at our calendar and our Helper of the Day, we may chat about changes for the day, or read a story about our current unit of study.

9:30-9:50 Group Time
Everyone gathers in one location (often art table or the outside tables) for an activity planned by the teacher.  May be open ended art project, a science exploration or learning about a new material.

9:50-12:00 Work Time
This is the more child-directed portion of their day.  In nicer weather, the door is open and children have access to both the indoor and outdoor classrooms and eventually we all end up outside!

12:00-12:20 Circle Time
Music, fingerplays, dancing, games, and storytime!

12:20-1:00 Lunch
Plus clean up, potty, prep for rest time

1:00-2:30  Rest Time

2:30-4:30 Work Time
This is the more child-directed portion of their day.  In nicer weather, the door is open and children have access to both the indoor and outdoor classrooms and eventually we all end up outside!
